Newport NH - 4/23/10

April 23rd, 2010

Our last nite of the Spring Season was lead by newcomers Mike and Mary. Always a fun time when couples co-lead the evening and the 16 of us sure had a blast. After our standard warm-up, we started the night with Elbow Tag. We then moved onto Mattball, Coneball and finished the evening with Floor Hockey.

Some random thoughts about the night:

1. Erin, so close in mattball. So, so close. Practice up for next season!

2. I think Brenda has now become the all time bunt leader in Mattball. In fact I think she was still bunting during Floor Hockey.

3. Worse part about being “IT” during Elbow Tag tonite was definitely the smell of the pinnies. Thanks to The Barrell who took the pinnies home to wash. Well that’s why he said he was taking them home.

4. Mike learned a valuable lesson in being a co-Commish with your spouse. Regardless of the rules you think you are about to describe, you will be wrong.

5. Chris the Inker. Still feeling a little shell shocked from playing goal?

6. Old School outfit of the season had to go to Chris the Barrell. I haven’t seen orange shorts like those in years.

7. Who knew Tyler was a professional mattball player. Easily the Home Run King. Without the juice.

8. Catch of the nite had to go to Mallori during mattball.

9. Great to have Kristin and Rachel join us all the way from Concord. Hope to see you again next season.

10. Speaking of next season, will we see Sgt. Slaughter again? Will the Paulinator return to dominate? Will we play Stump Clump? Or more specifically will we find the stump? We’ll answer those questions…after the break.

11. Nice job Mike and Mary.

Thanks to everyone for another fun Old School PE season. It was great to see many new faces as well as those that have been with us since Season 1. I hope you have an enjoyable summer and look forward to seeing you at Summer School. Stay tuned for more information.

April 16th, 2010

The beginning of school vacation week provided us with a light turnout, but first time Commish and Old School PE newcomer Ben had us up and ready to play.

We started the night with a game of Knockout, then moved to Ultimate Chicken. We then “rested” with some dodgeball games. Ready for more action we moved onto Floor Hockey and finished the night with a game of basketball.

As always on to some random musings and general goofiness:

1. Great job by Erin during Knockout. Oh yeah, she’s got skills.

2. Knockout is a good exercise game and a fun way to get people moving. Well those that don’t get knocked out early, like yours truly.

3. Daring to be different, Ben says, forget the frisbee, we’re going with the chicken. Don’t worry our “friends” from PETA, we used a rubber chicken.

4. Who knew that one team was stacked with Dodgeball Professionals.

5. Remember as Patches says: “If you’re going to become true dodgeballers, then you’ve got to learn the five d’s of dodgeball: dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge!”.

6. Mike D was a force in net during Floor Hockey. I didn’t think a guy his size could fit in the net, but he did it, it worked and nothing went in.

7. Ed was on fire on the court. Nice passing, stick work.

8. After some discussion it was decided that we would finish the nite with basketball. Basketball is definitely not my game. I find I was missing 4 very basic elements: (1) A stick (2) A puck (3) skates (4) and the obviously lack of basketball ability.

Well congrats to Ben on a great job keeping us moving and entertained. For our last nite of the Spring Season, we have the Commish team of Mike & Mary B. Come join us!

What a great nite as 24 people hit the gym to see what first time Commish Jaben had in store. Though new to Old School PE this season, Jaben was prepared and ready to get us moving. We started with a fun obstacle course and then moved to backboard dodgeball. After a short break, onto wiffleball and floor hockey. We finished the night with a easy slow moving game of SBasketball. Easy? Slow moving? OK not really. But it was a blast!

So onto some random musings and general goofiness:

1. Two “All-In Baskets” during dodgeball from the same team during the same game was great. Nice job Brenda and Mandy.

2. Shannon, way to deny the hubby a score during SBasketball. Nope, nope, nope. I want to write a followup to that last statement but, nope, not gonna do it.

3. What was happening during wiffleball? There were move dives in that game then in downtown Milwaukee.

4. Speaking of dives, Chris the Barrell you need to be careful around Mallori. One of these days, when you aren’t paying attention, you may find a dodgeball imbeded in your .

5. Erin, YOU SO CRAZY!

6. Jolene, quite the fighter, takes one in the coconut during dodgeball. Sits out a bit to recover, then comes back in and finds herself the last one standing on her team. Held off the other team well and got some new players back in. She definitely wins the Patches O’Houlihan award for the evening.

7. For those of you that don’t know, during wiffleball Mandy has a designated area. That is her area and no one elses. It’s her space. Ask her about it.

Again great job Jaben. Your Commish for next week…The husband and wife team of John and Jolene. Come join us!

March 26th, 2010

Although a cold nite for the beginning of spring, 26 people attended the evening hosted by veteran Commish Mike D. We had a game that never was, a game with “receptacles” and plenty of laughs.

First on the agenda was Stump Clump. A game usually played when Mike is the Commish, but tonite it was not to be as we were missing one important piece: the stump. Granted we could have used one of Ryan’s shirts, but it wouldn’t be the same. Sure, both are woodsy, but not the same.

Well we moved onto our next game, and move is the right word. Elbow Tag had a lot of folks moving, tagging, elbowing. A great way to start the nite. I really like this game as you get to socialize quite a bit and run around screaming and waving your arms.

Close Quarters Fortball was next. A version of dodgeball, steal the frisbees and very fast action all rolled into one. “Frisbees go in the receptacles, that’s what the receptacles are for!” Ok. Got it?!

We had quite a few laughs thru the nite, but a lot seem to happen at our next game: mattball. Kristi, we are all glad that you are ok, but from where we were standing, that was funny. And no your hubby didn’t cause that one. He was having his own challenges with the ball. The catch of the night had to belong to Mallori.

We finished the nite with SBasketball. Adam, the key to playing goalie is to keep the ball from going behind you into the net. We’ll give you an A for effort though. The Paulinator was back and taking charge on the court as she usually does.

Great job Mike. Our next Commish, newcomer Jaben.

Spring was in the air Friday nite as the 28 players blossomed with delight as the amazing and talented team of Ryan and Brandi has us all captivated for an evening of Old School PE like no other. WHAT???? Oh man, I must have hit my head again. Let’s start over, 28 people, Commish Team of Ryan and Brandi, lots of fun. Whew. That’s better.

If you wanted exercise, tonite was the night as we started with Russian Baseball, then moved onto Coneball. After a short break it was time for Floor Hockey and then we finished the evening with SBasketball.

So I have a few thoughts/observations about the evening…(shock I know):

1. Spouse for the evening or not, it’s never a good idea to run into them. Erin, I am sorry. I’ll make it up to you. PJ will do the laundry for a month. I think that’s fair.

2. Every week so far this season we have seen new faces who come out and seem to get the concept of fun, friends and fitness. This is a good thing.

3. Newcomer Robin was outstanding in goal during Floor Hockey.

4. Knee high white tube socks are still in. Yeah, I know, it’s a sophisticated look, not many can pull it off, and it’s still all that.

5. The 4th game of Coneball may have been the quickest one ever played. One dodgeball knocking over the opposing team’s “coneballs” (there’s a joke in there somewhere, but I am going to leave it alone…).

6. Michael B, Oh Michael B, where art thou?

7. Thanks to Ryan for stopping me during the warmups. Otherwise I think we’d still be at the gym doing burpees.

8. I’d like to give a shout out to those participating in the Newport Biggest Loser. You guys are all great, proud of you.

9. TIME!!!

Nice job by the husband/wife team of Ryan and Brandi. Kept us moving and laughing all night. Moving on to next week’s evening, your Commish will be none other then Mike D.

Newport NH - 03/05/10

March 5th, 2010

What a great way to start Season 9 of Old School PE in Newport as 30 people came ready to play.  We saw many familiar faces along with quite a few first timers.  I got the call for the Commish duties to start the season off.  I had several games planned unsure of the attendance we may have seen due to the many other activities going on that evening. But as always, we had a great turnout.

I started the evening off with a simple relay game of “Scooter Grab and Go”.  5 “teams” played, traveling down the gym on their scooters, picking up items and traveling back.  Folks got pretty creative where they carried the items (Right Erin, you so crazy!).  I thought I heard a couple of “you want us to ride on that”?

Then onto another mini team game.  Not sure what to call this one, so if you have any suggestions, let me know.  “Team Circle Race” is about what I have for now, so we’ll go with that.  Quite fun to watch the teams work together to move the ball down the court and back.  As the races went on, teams got a little more daring and well, many had to go and fetch the ball they were kicking.

And then we moved to backboard dodgeball.  Always a fun game, and the new folks were definitely ready to play.  With 15 players a side, people were moving in and out of the game quickly.

There were a few looks of confusion as I setup for the next game.  I placed two boxing gloves on the center line of the gym so we can play “Steal the Glove”.  It did seem however that some folks thought you were going to have to run to the middle of the gym, put on a glove and well you know the rest.  Nope, sorry, we don’t promote that at Old School PE although I do see a lot of spouses thinking of it during dodgeball.  Sending out 2 sets of runners to grab the gloves was great, 3 sets was hilarious.

It was now time for some floor hockey. Large net, dodgeball and 5 on 5 made for some fun play.  Of course we finished the nite with a great game of SBasketball.

So Season 9 started off with a bang and we look forward to the next 7 nights of the spring season.

Next week’s Commish: Chris the Barrel.

November 13th, 2009

Our biggest turnout yet this season, 30 people showed up ready to play.  I got the call to be Commish and I was ready for a fun nite.  We played a variety of games including clothes relay, scooter relay, mattball, fortball, floor hockey, sbasketball, and ending with rock, paper, scissors.

So on to some random thoughts about the evening….

1.  Sgt Slaughter.  What do you exactly call that “catch” you made in mattball?  Is that the roll up the face, stop at the top?  I’m not sure you could ever do that again.  Or want to.

2.  I think Kristie wanted me to let her use the gloves from the clothes relay during floor hockey.  I thought I heard something about husband, gonna drop him if he comes near me with the puck…not sure.  I could have heard wrong.

3.  Kirk, when you kick the ball to yourself off a wall, the key to completing the “transaction” is to catch the ball.  Letting it go thru your legs doesn’t really accomplish much.

4.  Nice action during the scooter relay. Getting close to a mini roller derby.  Ok not really, but definitely fun to watch.

5.  Ryan, you’re looking svelte.

6.  Glen was a little bothered by my calling of “time” during hockey.  Like it was my fault he didn’t get up the court fast enough.  Take the shot man.

7.  Ok, now 5 burpees.  When I say down you say one. Ready? Down. 1. Down. 1. Down. 1. Down. 1. Down. 1.  Umm, when do we say 2?

8.  TIME!  (ok what did you just drop?)

9.  You guys were true sports, letting me finish the great night with rock, paper, scissors.  Of course for the record, the Paulinator crushed her opponent.  No contest.

Our last Commish for the season…Hillary.  See you there!

November 6th, 2009

24 people showed up for a nite of Old School PE in Newport lead by original Old Schooler Erin.  We played a wide variety of games this night including musical balls, coneball, barrel ball, ultimate pigskin and finished with floor hockey.

A few thoughts about the evening…..

1.  There was a great energy in the gym.  Players were fired up and ready to go!  That always makes for a fun nite.

2.  No Touching!

3.  So Crazy Erin brings back barrell ball for one night.  It was a lot of fun playing this again and I think everyone held back around the “goal”.  We may play this game more.

4.  Yeah nice job by Josh and I during ultimate pigskin…NOT.  It was more like Mike Grossman throwing to Josh OchoStinko.

5.  Hey Sgt Slaughter….”Outta My Way!”

6.  Brad, you making anyone proud?

Well great job by Erin and another fun night of Old School PE in the books.  We only have two nights left this season.  Hope you can join us.

And finally, this week’s Commish…Yours truly.

October 16th, 2009

What a great nite for newcomer and first time Commish Keri.  She lead the 16 of us in elbow tag, a game involving hula hoops and bean bags, floor hockey and ending the night with backboard dodgeball.

So on to my usual ramblings, musings, and general silliness:

1.  Great to see the Dynamic Duo of Paula and Kristi return.  This was most evident during floor hockey where they defended their team’s goal with the usual force that we have all come to expect.

2.  I liked the hula hoop game.  Lots of “strategy” and running around.  Since this game doesn’t have an official name, I will now call it:  Hula Guard and Steal.

3.  Play of the Evening had to be the very last one with the great catch by Jason during dodgeball.

4.  Glen definitely had the keys to tonight’s Old School.  Literally,  we wouldn’t have gotten in the building without him.  Oh yeah and nice job during hockey too.

5.  Tonight’s MVP had to be Kristi during dodgeball.  Twice her team let her down, leaving her out there on the court to defend their honor by herself.  And she came thru both times.

6.  Missed you in floor hockey Ryan.  How’s the taffy?

7.  Nice wheels out there during elbow tag Paula.  Pretty quick for a 29 year old.

Thanks Keri for keeping us entertained and having a fun night.  Next up for Commish duty: Jeremy.

Newport NH 10/09/09

October 9th, 2009

On a night of firsts, 20 people survived the Commish team of Chris and Tyler as they had the crew running from the start.  The usually comfy Old School warmups were pushed aside for more robust exercises and stretches.  Then on to the games.  We did some sprint races, then some clothes relays, 3 legged relays, shoe relays.  Then rock, tree, bridge.  Whew.  I’m winded just writing about it.  We ended the night with floor hockey and spasketball.

So here are some random thoughts about the night:

1.  I really liked all the different stretches we did in the beginning of the nite.  They were the kind of stretches a physical therapist would be proud of and a local football coach could learn from.

2.  Rock, paper, scissors or rock, tree, bridge was interesting.  People running like crazy.  I think someone got tagged in the head while acting like a rock.  Sounded like it might have stung a little.  So you see, rocks do have feelings too.

3.  I haven’t been able to write this in a while, but Erin YOU SO CRAZY!

4.  Ummm, sorry Ryan, I ummm, ahhh, ummm, didn’t see you?

5.  Ok run to the center of the court, cross overs to the outside, run to the other end, cross overs back to the middle, then backwards to the center of the court, cross overs to the outside of the court then backwards to where you started. Next person in line goes. You get that?

6.  Pinnies are nice, but field hockey socks are even better.  Huh(?) you say.  Join us next week for more.

So join us this week as newcomer Keri leads us in Old School PE games.
